US visa photo requirements (2x2 inch) explained

The 2x2 inch (51x51mm) specification

• 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51mm), square format
• Head height between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25-35mm) from chin to top of hair
• Eye height between 1 1/8 inches and 1 3/8 inches (28-35mm) from the bottom of the photo
• Taken within the last 6 months, showing your current appearance
• At least 600 x 600 pixels if uploading digitally for DS-160

Background

The background must be plain white or off-white, with no shadows, patterns, textures or objects. This is the same requirement as for US passport photos, and is one of the most common reasons consular photos are rejected.

Expression, glasses and head coverings

• Neutral facial expression with both eyes open — natural smiles are permitted (unlike many other countries) but not required
• Glasses are no longer permitted in US visa or passport photos as of recent State Department guidance — remove them before your photo
• Head coverings are only allowed for religious reasons, and your full face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead must remain visible
• No hats, headphones or anything else covering your face

US visa photo vs US passport photo — what's different

The core specification — 2x2 inches, white background, head and eye height ranges — is identical for US visa and US passport photos, since both follow the same State Department standard.

The main practical difference is how the photo is submitted. Passport applications typically use a printed photo attached to the application form, while most visa applications (DS-160 and similar) require a digital upload directly into the online form, with the same 600x600px minimum resolution and a file size limit (typically under 240KB as a JPEG).
