Boots
Boots in-store photo booths and counters charge around £12.50 for a set of passport photos. You'll need to visit a branch with a photo counter, queue, and have your photo taken on the spot — there's no way to preview the result before paying, and if it's rejected by HMPO you'll need to return to the store (or pay again elsewhere) to get a new set. Smart Passport Photo gives you the same HMPO-compliant result, with a free preview before you pay, for £3.99 — no trip required.
Post Office
The Post Office's "Check & Send" passport photo service costs around £13.50 and is widely available across the UK, which is its main advantage — almost every town has one. As with Boots, you pay before seeing the result, and a rejected photo means another trip and another fee. Because Smart Passport Photo runs the same checks HMPO applies (background, head position, expression, lighting) before you pay, you avoid the wasted journey and the wasted £13.50 if something doesn't meet spec.
Snappy Snaps
Snappy Snaps is typically the most expensive high-street option at around £14.99, reflecting its positioning as a specialist photo retailer with same-day prints. For a digital passport application, however, you don't need a physical print at all — GOV.UK accepts a digital photo (with an IDPC code, which we include free with every UK order) or a digital upload depending on the application type. Paying £14.99 and queuing in-store for a digital-only requirement is, for most applicants, an unnecessary cost and trip.
Why the price difference?
High-street providers price for in-person service: staff time, a dedicated photo booth or camera setup, and prints you may not need. Smart Passport Photo is a pure software service — our AI does the cropping, background replacement and compliance checking that a photo booth operator would otherwise do manually, which is why we can offer the same compliance standard for a fraction of the price, with no subscription and no hidden fees.
