UK passport and driving licence — light grey
HMPO requires a plain light grey background — or plain cream — with no patterns, shadows or other colours. The exact shade used in UK photo booths is approximately #EBEBEB (a pale, neutral grey). A pure white background is technically acceptable but light grey is what official guidance recommends and what HMPO's automated checks expect.

The US State Department requires a plain white or off-white background with no patterns, objects, or other people visible. Shadows on the background will cause rejection.

EU / Schengen — white or light grey
